The town is set in the southwest part of Bulgaria, 160 km from Sofia. Famous to be the Gate towards the magnificent Pirin Mountain, Bansko is the newest and fastest developing of the Bulgarian mountain resorts with a growing influence upon the summer season. Bansko is an important cultural centre for the region. According to historic records, the settlement was first established about 9th -10th century A.D. on the site where ancient Thracian settlements had existed. The specific atmosphere of the Bulgarian National Revival, the rich culture-historic heritage, the preserved folklore and crafts, the original cuisine, the plenty of cozy and snug small private hotels and mehani (taverns) in traditional style, makes Bansko an unique tourist center. Original fortified and artistically decorated houses have been preserved from the 18th and 19th century, built almost entirely of stone, with small barred windows, tall walls, heavy metal-plated gates and interconnected by narrow and winding cobble-stone streets. One can see 150 cultural monuments. The Art School of Bansko in woodcarving, icon painting and wall painting has formed in the end of the XVIII century and shows one of the brightest phenomena in the history of the Bulgarian culture of this period. The church "St. Trinity", which is sample of that school, was built in 1835 and is second largest in Bulgaria, after the Alexander Nevski Cathedral in Sofia. Also noteworthy are the museum houses and collections, souvenir shops and romantic holiday residences, hotels and taverns cuddled in the narrow and picturesque streets. The atmosphere of an ancient Bulgarian town from the 10th century combines with its natural beauty and outdoor opportunities. The skiing conditions in Bansko are excellent. The new 7 km cabin lift from Bansko to the ski-runs could care up to 2400 persons per hour. The common length of the ski runs is over 65 km. Totally 55 snow cannons blow an artificial snow to make the ski runs suitable for skiing during the whole season. There is also a 650 m long ski run with artificial lightning, which can be use for night riding. Over 150 instructors work in the ski schools and the ski storages can offer 3000 units of ski from all famous brands like Atomik, Salomon, ect. The resort will offer to its guests over 7500 beds during the upcoming winter season and 2000 of them are in the recently constructed apartments for sale, a "second home" type
