Gabrovo is situated on the northern slopes of Middle Balkan Range, in a hilly territory, on both sides of the Iantra River. It is located 220 km north-east of Sofia, 274 km south-west of Varna, 46 km south-east of Veliko Tarnovo and 28 km south-east of Sevlievo. The climate is continental. The winter in Gabrovo is mild (average January temperature 1.6°?), with heavy snowfalls. The average number of days with snow is 41.4 per year and the snow stays on the ground from 100 to 110 days (significantly more in the higher mountain areas). The rainfalls are a bit higher than average for the country with 880 mm falling per year in Gabrovo. Gabrovo is a municipal center filled with numerous monuments of cultural and historical importance, and has a significant concentration of preserved archeological sites near to the city center. The specific image of Gabrovo municipality in the national cultural space is firstly formed by the uniqueness of the Ethnographic museum "Etar", the House of humor and satire, the Architectural and historical reserve "Bozhantsi" etc., annually visited by more than 200 thousand people, many of which are foreigners.
