Geographically, historically and spiritually Sofia is a part of the Balkan Peninsula: a place related to various cultures, emotions and world outlook. Our Capital City is one of the oldest of all European cities. Sofia has existed as a settlement not less than 7000 years ago and has been Bulgaria’s capital for the past 120 years. It is the center of all political, economic and cultural life in Bulgaria. The town has been renowned with its mineral springs and the beautiful mountain for millennia. Sofia is situated in the very heart of the Balkan Peninsula. Distances to the neighboring capital cities are relatively short – by car, one can reach them within hours. The city of over a million of residents is located in the southern outskirts of the fertile Sofia Plain, at 550 m asl, resting to the south against the Vitosha Mountain (2290m asl). Vitosha is a mountain with abundant flora. Near Sofia lies Boyana church, which is one of the most valuable memorials of Bulgarian and European culture. The church boasts frescoes, acclaimed by specialists as “the best examples of eastern mediaeval art during its twelve century history”. During the years of the totalitarian regime (9 September 1944 - 10 November 1989) Sofia became the major national economic, academic and cultural centre. From its years of socialist growth, however, the capital inherited a great deal of problems, which are at present the priorities of the democratically - elected council of Sofia. Sofia Municipality is the biggest owner of immovable property after the state. The municipality has the right to ownership on its property and is completely autonomous in deciding its fate. In exercising its powers it does not require the approval of other bodies, and of state bodies, in particular. According to the LSGLGA Sofia Municipality is an administrative and territorial unit with status of region. It combines self-government of the community with the implementation of government policies for the development of the capital city. In addition to being an owner, Sofia Municipality is also an entrepreneur who, either independently or through its companies, conducts economic activity or invests in infrastructural or other projects. Being an investor itself, Sofia Municipality creates conditions for and is conducive to the attraction of foreign investments. Foreign investors are welcome on the territory of Sofia since, due to the general economic situation in the country, the financial resources of the municipality are restricted to some extent. The present leadership of Sofia Municipality has set itself a number of ambitious tasks, among which attracting foreign investments are a priority.
